The transport infrastructure in Salamanca is excellent, with a range of reasonably priced travel options for everyone. Within driving distance of the nearby Madrid Barajas International Airport (MAD), many visitors to Salamanca choose to rent a car, which allows the freedom to travel around at your own pace.

Further modes of public transport in the Salamanca area include buses and long-distance coach travel - based around the bus station on the northwestern side of Salamanca, regular RENFE trains travelling to a wide range of destinations, both near and far, and a selection of taxis throughout the city. Much of central Salamanca is well-pedestrianised and walking around the heart of the city is often one of the simplest ways to travel and navigate this district.

The city of Salamanca does not contain an international airport and the nearest air gateway is located in Spain's capital city of Madrid. The Madrid Barajas International Airport (MAD) is located around 200 km / 124 miles from Salamanca and a range of ground transport connects Madrid Airport to central Salamanca, including buses and trains, which regularly travel between the two cities.

Car Rental

Cars and motorcycles can be rented in the Salamanca area and provide the perfect mode of transport, allowing you to explore the surrounding towns and villages with ease. For those wishing to travel further afield, many major roads are situated just outside of Salamanca and include the N-501 - which leads southwest towards Avila and Madrid, the N-630 - heading in a northerly direction to Zamora, and the N-620 - which provides travel to the west of Salamanca, to Cuidad Rodrigo and ultimately Portugal.

Buses and Coaches

Salamanca bus station can be found along the Avenida de Filiberto Villalobos, to the northwest of the city centre. With many regular buses operating throughout the day, public bus transport is a particularly inexpensive way to travel around the Salamanca area. A number of long-distance buses are also available and travel outside of Salamanca, with popular destinations including Madrid (less than three hours), Valladolid (around one and a half hours) and Avila (one and a half hours). Further buses travel from Salamanca to La Alberca, Béjar, Candelario, Cuidad Rodrigo, Segovia and Zamora, amongst other locations. Salamanca bus station is within easy walking distance of the heart of the city, the Plaza Mayor.

Salamanca train station, the 'Paseo de la Estación de Ferrocarril', stands on the opposite side of the city to the bus station, in the northwestern region of the city. Numerous RENFE trains travel to the Salamanca train station on a daily basis, with frequent services to and from Madrid (two and a half hours), Avila (less than two hours) and Valladolid (two and a half hours). Central Salamanca can be reached from the foot by the train station, along the Paseo de la Estación, which leads to the Plaza Espana, the Calle Toro and finally the Plaza Mayor. Alternatively, buses are available from Salamanca train station and travel to the central Plaza del Mercado.

Most taxi fares in Salamanca are reasonably priced and taxis are a convenient method of transport around the region, being available at the airport and at centrally located taxi ranks. Taxis can also be hailed from the street and arrange in advance by telephone.
