Salamanca and the Plaza Mayor
When you first arrive in the city, start your exploration at the Plaza Mayor. This is a beautiful square and central to much of the action. The Plaza Mayor has a Baroque character and lots of cafes, with al fresco tables outside. The square was built in the middle of the 18th century and is just the ideal place to be on a sunny afternoon. I could have happily sat here for hours, in fact that's exactly what I did!

A House of Shells?
A House of Shells? No, it's not actually made of shells, but decorated with them, the shells of scallops. It is known is Salamanca as the Casa de las Conchas and I learned that it dates from the latter part of the 15th century. It is located on the Calle Mayor.

Walking around Salamanca and along the Gran Via
La Gran Via is definitely the main artery in Salamance and lies dirctly north of the historic old town area. There are lots of hotels and important buildings lining the Gran Via, together with plenty of shops and eateries. If you have time, take a walk along both sides. You won't regret it, in my humble opinion.
