One of the main tourist attractions and draw cards in central Salamanca, Plaza Mayor dates back to the first part of the 1700s and is famous for its endless arches and surrounding historic buildings, which include the City Hall (Ayuntamiento). Over the years, this important public space has hosted numerous events and fiestas, and consequently many of the buildings feature large balconies to ensure optimum views of the action. A number of local shops and cafés can be found in and around the Plaza Mayor.

Part of the Plaza de los Bandos, in the centre of Salamanca, Solis Palace is a historic 16th-century building, which was greatly remodelled in the 1930s. Now used as an office space by the Telefónica company, the building retains a number of its original features and charm, and is still an impressive building. The Palacio de Solis can only be viewed from the outside.

Built at the end of the 19th century, the Salamanca Bullring is a major structure in its own right, with three levels and many detailed features. Providing seating for more than 10,000 spectators, the Plaza de Toros La Glorieta features regular bullfights, particularly during June and September, and also hosts many popular fiestas, outdoor events and occasional summer concerts.

With almost 800 years of study and academic achievements, Salamanca University is one of Spain's oldest and most important universities, and the complex comprises a number of extremely historic buildings. Founded in 1254, Salamanca University currently features 16 faculties, more than 60 departments, four main university schools and over 35,000 students. Close to both the Tormes River and Plaza Mayor, university attractions include cafés, art works, seasonal sporting events and a number of notable buildings, such as Anaya College (Colegio de Anaya / Palacio de Anaya), and the San Pelayo College (Colegio de San Pelayo).
